History isn’t one of my favorite subjects. Far off places, people I don’t know – for me, the details blur together into an indecipherable mess. It takes something extraordinary to create the connections that make the facts and stories of our past memorable and retrievable for me.
As homeschoolers, we strive for our children to learn to the best of their ability. We search for materials that fit their learning style, appeal to their interests, and capture their attention. Many turn to hands-on activities as a way to create those memorable moments, especially with history, where we can recreate many of the details of everyday lives.
But what gives us insight into the ancient past? Who are the people who research and find the artifacts that we see in books? And what can we learn from them?
Archaelogy: the study of prehistoric peoples and their cultures. It’s a fascinating occupation, one that people today experience primarily by seeing fast-paced action movies on TV. We have little concept of what they actually do on a day-to-day basis.
Roman Town, by Dig-It! Games, is an educational game that brings you deep into that world of dusty digs and intriguing finds. It captures the imagination while encouraging thinking and problem solving, and saturates you in the left-behind artifacts from the town of Fossura, a Roman town that was buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Dig-It! Games tells us that Roman Town is created at a 5th-8th grade level, but is enjoyable for ages 8 to 88. Believe it. The only time I got to try it was when the kids were in bed, and it was a challenge getting them to turn it off long enough to get their regular schoolwork done.
Immersing you and your team of archaelogists, vivid illustrations in Roman Town embed Roman life and history naturally into gameplay. Fun mini-games and puzzles, quick quizzes to test your understanding, and participation in a life-life excavation from beginning to end will make this the history that is remembered.
Roman Town can be used as a supplement to your regular history studies, or as a “unit study” focal point on its own. Or, just have it in the household as a gaming alternative. This is one that they’ll play for the fun of it – and never notice that they’re learning while they do it.
Teaching style, learning style, it’s all irrelevant so long as you have a computer and someone willing and able to use it. Roman Town is a must-buy item – not for the history, or the archaeology, but for the critical thinking and logic practice that’s built-in and naturally enhanced.
Roman Town is currently available on CD-rom for PC only – we’re told a Mac version is in development.
System requirements: Win Vista/XP/2000; CPU 800 Mhz; RAM 412MB; 350 MB free hard drive space.
The regular price of Roman Town is $39.95, but from now through February 21, 2011, you can use coupon code TOS2011 for a 50% discount! At just $19.96, this is a fantastic price for a great game with an educational spin – even if you’re not studying Roman times right now. If you’d like ideas for activities and discussion questions to expand learning opportunities, Dig-It! Games also offers an downloadable Educator’s Manual for $19.95.
