A Man Who Changed Lives ~ Learning Breakthrough #Review
Sometimes, in life, you encounter things just a little too late. I wish with my whole heart that Frank Belgau’s book A Life in Balance had been placed in my hands ten or fifteen years ago… when it might have changed the childhood of one of my kids.
What Is A Life In Balance?
Mr. Belgau’s tale is part memoir, part science lecture, and entirely special needs children. It is the story of the development, over decades, through trial and error and success, of his remarkable Learning Breakthrough Program.
Mr. Belgau leads the reader through his own childhood and early adulthood, describing the experiences and people that put him on the path to research and discoveries. The story is so fluidly readable that it’s easy to follow along as he explores how to help the learning disabled children in his charge. The science terminology and concepts are explained with such clarity, even for the layman, that not only does the reader understand his perceptions, we’re right there with him in asking, “why isn’t this common knowledge yet?”
Who Should Read A Life In Balance?
Parents of children with learning disabilities will understand – we see our kids struggled with their schoolwork, whether they’re homeschooled, or in public or private school, and we want to help. There are so many potential treatments out there that it’s confusing, dismaying, and ultimately overwhelming, and sometimes we find ourselves trying one thing after another, until something works.
That, in its most simple explanation, is exactly what Mr. Belgau did. Blessed with the opportunity to engage an entire classroom of children – and their actively participating parents – at one time, he had a unique change to create, enhance, and observe activities that obtained measurable, visible results. It took years for him to perform enough research to begin to understand why those techniques work, and today his work remains far less mainstream than it could potentially be.
But as parents, we don’t need to understand the science. What we’re after is the results – the measurable, repeatable results that many have obtained through the Learning Breakthrough Program.
What is available from Learning Breakthrough?
I’ve just read A Life in Balance, not used the actual items in a Learning Breakthrough kit. All of the items in the kit, and their general usage, are described throughout the book, so I thought it relevant to show you a pic (below) of the kind of items that someone with the full equipment would be using. There is a portion of the program that doesn’t require specialized equipment, called the “Space Walk”, and instructions for all of those activities are given in detail at the end of A Life In Balance.
A Life in Balance is currently priced at $16.94. I recommend this read for all parents – special needs or not, because even the “kids that learn easy” can benefit from improving how efficiently their brain works. In fact, it would seem reasonable for parents to learn and do the activities alongside their children – both so that they can help their child, and so that they can experience the changes for themselves.
