Teen Prasso Bible Study #Review
Home bible study using a curricula isn’t the norm around here, but once in a while, something catches our eye and makes it worthwhile to change things up a bit. My two younger kids (13 and 15) and I have been taking a look at a 13-week study from Prasso Ministries.
There are two books, the Teen Prasso Teacher’s Manual and Homework Manual, both spiral-bound with a glossy, heavyweight cover. The teacher manual is approximately 120 pages in 8.5″ x 11″ format, while the homework manual runs about 180 pages in a slightly smaller 8″ x 8″. The teaching guide is well-laid out and easy to read, while the homework manual includes teen-friendly fonts and sufficient space for writing. Students will each need their own manual for written responses.
The program is designed so that once a week, a lesson is taught by a facilitator, and during the rest of the week, students will have a few questions to answer each day, plus a few that are intended for short discussion. Given that we were using the materials at home, it made more sense for us to adapt the curricula in the way that we normally would for this type of study. It’s much more effective (and fun) for us to discuss all the questions aloud as a group. Due to a busy lifestyle that keeps us on the go, we also prefer to be flexible with scheduling, so we’d often go through several days worth of questions at one go. (There are even times that this means that a kid is reading the lesson and questions aloud in the car – you’d be surprised at how engaged a captive audience can get. )
One thing that I appreciated was the reminder – early in the teaching guide – that students should be doing 80% of the talking. The goal with the questions isn’t necessarily to ask them verbatim, but to guide the students into a thoughtful discussion that will allow them to process what they’ve learned so that they might apply it in their own lives. They’re much more likely to do so when they’ve reached the conclusions on their own, rather than simply being told.
The purpose of Teen Prasso is to provide guidance from the bible in a format that students can apply to their own lives, and show that by following God’s path, their life will move in the right direction. Teens will learn tools for dealing with everyday challenges that they face in their lives.
Chances are, many of the concepts presented in Teen Prasso are those that you, as a homeschool parent, are already teaching your children in one way or another. The benefits to using a study like Prasso are two-fold; teens will come to understand that these things are not just their parent’s will, but God’s, and parents will have a framework for the more challenging discussions that they’ve been uncertain how to address with their child.
In our household, our lines of communication are fairly open… there aren’t a lot of secrets, and my kids seem fairly comfortable discussing almost anything with me, far more so than many other families we know. Despite that, this bible study has allowed us to discuss ideas that we hadn’t broached before, and as a result, I would definitely consider it a valuable tool to have in the parenting toolbox.
