Unlock our Library Event

unlock04

The Library District is up for a new vote on November 2 – today we attended an “Unlock Our Library” Event with lots of hope, fun, and people.

Prayer and positive thoughts. Pretty much all we have left that we can do.

Last Library Day & Fish Prints

We spent a few hours at the library on closing day. Partly as a way to say goodbye for ourselves, and partly to keep the library staff company. Even a library shouldn’t be alone as it dies… and those staying til the end should have company and chocolate.

There was one final children’s program scheduled for that afternoon. A lady from Spring Creek Fish Hatchery came and read Salmon Stream, then helped the children make gyotaku, a traditional form of Japanese fish printing. Creature Feature at the Library

FVRL library brought in a reptile handler with snakes and lizards for the entertainment program Friday… these pics are from the petting zoo at the end. If I get the pics of some of the not-close-up-because-they’re-dangerous to turn out decently, I’ll share them in a couple days. So without further ado:

Summer Reading Programs List

Since our local library is closing June 30th, they’re not able to provide their regular summer reading program. I’ve been compiling a list of other opportunities, and thought some of you might also find it helpful.

The location notes are for those local to me – many of those are also going to be available in other metro areas. Check out the sites or Google Maps for locations nearest to you.

If you know of any I’ve missed, or have corrections, please share in the comments and I’ll update the post. Thanks!

Grief and Books

I’ve been quiet these last couple weeks, trying to come to terms with the death of something I love.

I’m not sure I’ll ever reach acceptance – though I may succumb to resignation at some point. The dumbfounded disbelief of 8:09 pm, May 18th, turned to the hot anger of May 19th and the sadness of May 20th. Still the fire and blues remain, intermittent and persistent.

Others found their way to making plans “what do we try next” plans sooner then I – anger gets in the way of constructive ideas. I’ve finally . . . → Read More: Grief and Books

Kids change, but the library stays the same… we hope!

New picture, same place. They’ve sure grown, haven’t they?

Tuesday, May 18th, is the last day to get ballots in. The wait will be over soon.

I’m a low-income homeschool mom who relies on the library. I have four kids that I can’t possibly supply with sufficient reading material in an effective manner without it. I’m hoping and praying that Tuesday will bring fresh life to our library… rather then the beginning of the end.

And then here is the old picture for comparison.

Saving Our Library One Vote At A Time

I live in a county with:

20,000+ people 40+ restaurants 20+ churches 6+ grocery stores

and July 1, 2010… maybe NO library.

Our Carnegie Library has been around since 1914. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places.

After years of neglecting the library and reducing funds, the county has decided to stop funding it entirely as of July 1st. Rescue has been months in the works, and a ballot is out this week asking voters to create a Library District.

If it passes, the Library will return to life.

If it fails…

the Library will close the books . . . → Read More: Saving Our Library One Vote At A Time
